What AI already does for extrudingWhat extruding no longer do alone

O*NET lists 26 tasks for extruding. None of them shows meaningful AI use at work yet.

What it does not touch, yetWhat still needs a human

26 of the 26 tasks show no AI use at work in the data.

  • Record and maintain production data, such as meter readings, and quantities, types, and dimensions of materials produced.Core task
  • Review work orders, specifications, or instructions to determine materials, ingredients, procedures, components, settings, and adjustments for extruding, forming, pressing, or compacting machines.Core task
  • Synchronize speeds of sections of machines when producing products involving several steps or processes.Core task
  • Turn controls to adjust machine functions, such as regulating air pressure, creating vacuums, and adjusting coolant flow.Core task
  • Activate machines to shape or form products, such as candy bars, light bulbs, balloons, or insulation panels.
  • Complete work tickets, and place them with products.
  • Couple air and gas lines to machines to maintain plasticity of material and to regulate solidification of final products.
  • Disassemble equipment to repair it or to replace parts, such as nozzles, punches, and filters.
  • Feed products into machines by hand or conveyor.
  • Install, align, and adjust neck rings, press plungers, and feeder tubes.
  • Measure arbors and dies to verify sizes specified on work tickets.
  • Measure, mix, cut, shape, soften, and join materials and ingredients, such as powder, cornmeal, or rubber to prepare them for machine processing.
  • Pour, scoop, or dump specified ingredients, metal assemblies, or mixtures into sections of machine prior to starting machines.
  • Remove materials or products from molds or from extruding, forming, pressing, or compacting machines, and stack or store them for additional processing.
  • Remove molds, mold components, and feeder tubes from machinery after production is complete.
  • Select and install machine components, such as dies, molds, and cutters, according to specifications, using hand tools and measuring devices.
  • Send product samples to laboratories for analysis.
  • Swab molds with solutions to prevent products from sticking.

How that compares

Among the 98 production occupations, extruding rank 37. The group averages 0.8%, and its most exposed job is Computer Numerically Controlled Tool Programmers at 12.1%. The average US occupation sits at 7.7%.

What this does and does not mean

Exposure is observed use, not a forecast. Anthropic maps work conversations with Claude onto the tasks O*NET lists for each job and asks, of the tasks AI could speed up, which are actually being used for at work. A use that does the task outright counts in full and a use that assists a person counts half. The task scores are averaged into the occupation figure by the share of time spent on each task.

A high figure means AI is already part of how this work gets done. It does not mean anyone has been replaced. Anthropic's own reading of the labour market finds no systematic rise in unemployment among exposed workers so far, and about 14% fewer 22 to 25 year olds starting exposed jobs.No measurable rise in unemployment among exposed workers so far, and about 14% fewer 22 to 25 year olds starting these jobs.
