What AI already does for semiconductor processing techniciansWhat semiconductor processing technicians no longer do alone
O*NET lists 17 tasks for semiconductor processing technicians. None of them shows meaningful AI use at work yet.
What it does not touch, yetWhat still needs a human
17 of the 17 tasks show no AI use at work in the data.
- Clean semiconductor wafers using cleaning equipment, such as chemical baths, automatic wafer cleaners, or blow-off wands.Core task
- Inspect equipment for leaks, diagnose malfunctions, and request repairs.Core task
- Inspect materials, components, or products for surface defects and measure circuitry, using electronic test equipment, precision measuring instruments, microscope, and standard procedures.Core task
- Load and unload equipment chambers and transport finished product to storage or to area for further processing.Core task
- Maintain processing, production, and inspection information and reports.Core task
- Manipulate valves, switches, and buttons, or key commands into control panels to start semiconductor processing cycles.Core task

- Study work orders, instructions, formulas, and processing charts to determine specifications and sequence of operations.Core task
- Align photo mask pattern on photoresist layer, expose pattern to ultraviolet light, and develop pattern, using specialized equipment.
- Calculate etching time based on thickness of material to be removed from wafers or crystals.
- Clean and maintain equipment, including replacing etching and rinsing solutions and cleaning bath containers and work area.
- Count, sort, and weigh processed items.
- Etch, lap, polish, or grind wafers or ingots to form circuitry and change conductive properties, using etching, lapping, polishing, or grinding equipment.
- Load semiconductor material into furnace.
- Monitor operation and adjust controls of processing machines and equipment to produce compositions with specific electronic properties, using computer terminals.
- Scribe or separate wafers into dice.
- Stamp, etch, or scribe identifying information on finished component according to specifications.
How that compares
Among the 98 production occupations, semiconductor processing technicians rank 81. The group averages 0.8%, and its most exposed job is Computer Numerically Controlled Tool Programmers at 12.1%. The average US occupation sits at 7.7%.

What this does and does not mean
Exposure is observed use, not a forecast. Anthropic maps work conversations with Claude onto the tasks O*NET lists for each job and asks, of the tasks AI could speed up, which are actually being used for at work. A use that does the task outright counts in full and a use that assists a person counts half. The task scores are averaged into the occupation figure by the share of time spent on each task.
A high figure means AI is already part of how this work gets done. It does not mean anyone has been replaced. Anthropic's own reading of the labour market finds no systematic rise in unemployment among exposed workers so far, and about 14% fewer 22 to 25 year olds starting exposed jobs.No measurable rise in unemployment among exposed workers so far, and about 14% fewer 22 to 25 year olds starting these jobs. Gap years for everyone. Labor market impacts, 5 March 2026.
