What AI already does for chemical engineersWhat chemical engineers no longer do alone
O*NET lists 13 tasks for chemical engineers. None of them shows meaningful AI use at work yet.
What it does not touch, yetWhat still needs a human
13 of the 13 tasks show no AI use at work in the data.
- Conduct research to develop new and improved chemical manufacturing processes.Core task
- Design and plan layout of equipment.Core task
- Design measurement and control systems for chemical plants based on data collected in laboratory experiments and in pilot plant operations.Core task
- Determine most effective arrangement of operations such as mixing, crushing, heat transfer, distillation, and drying.Core task
- Develop processes to separate components of liquids or gases or generate electrical currents, using controlled chemical processes.Core task
- Develop safety procedures to be employed by workers operating equipment or working in close proximity to ongoing chemical reactions.Core task

- Direct activities of workers who operate or are engaged in constructing and improving absorption, evaporation, or electromagnetic equipment.Core task
- Evaluate chemical equipment and processes to identify ways to optimize performance or to ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.Core task
- Monitor and analyze data from processes and experiments.Core task
- Perform laboratory studies of steps in manufacture of new products and test proposed processes in small-scale operation, such as a pilot plant.Core task
- Perform tests and monitor performance of processes throughout stages of production to determine degree of control over variables such as temperature, density, specific gravity, and pressure.Core task
- Prepare estimate of production costs and production progress reports for management.Core task
- Troubleshoot problems with chemical manufacturing processes.Core task
How that compares
Among the 34 architecture and engineering occupations, chemical engineers rank 23. The group averages 3.8%, and its most exposed job is Computer Hardware Engineers at 14.5%. The average US occupation sits at 7.7%.

What this does and does not mean
Exposure is observed use, not a forecast. Anthropic maps work conversations with Claude onto the tasks O*NET lists for each job and asks, of the tasks AI could speed up, which are actually being used for at work. A use that does the task outright counts in full and a use that assists a person counts half. The task scores are averaged into the occupation figure by the share of time spent on each task.
A high figure means AI is already part of how this work gets done. It does not mean anyone has been replaced. Anthropic's own reading of the labour market finds no systematic rise in unemployment among exposed workers so far, and about 14% fewer 22 to 25 year olds starting exposed jobs.No measurable rise in unemployment among exposed workers so far, and about 14% fewer 22 to 25 year olds starting these jobs. Gap years for everyone. Labor market impacts, 5 March 2026.
